On behalf of the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS), we are excited to announce the opening of the FY25 Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) and Senior SAFE grant programs. These programs fund age-appropriate fire and life safety education for school children (SAFE) and older adults (Senior SAFE), with up to $2 million available to support program payroll and purchases.

The SAFE grants have contributed significantly to the decline in Massachusetts child fire fatalities—from as many as two dozen per year in the mid-1990s to record-low levels today. The Senior SAFE grants, launched in 2014, were developed to help reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities among individuals aged 65 and older—who are now most at risk of dying in a fire at home. These grants support smoke and carbon monoxide alarm programs, educational outreach, and other safety measures through senior centers and councils on aging.

All municipal and state authority fire departments in Massachusetts are eligible to apply for one or both of these grants. Applications will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on December 10^th, 2024.
